Posidippus A&B. 14, ecphrasis on a gemstone

Well did the craftsman carve Pegasus, the horse, in mist-blue jasper, with hand and with mind alike. Bellerophon was indeed hurled down into the Alerian plain of the Cilicians, but this colt mounted up into the dark blue sky. To show this, he fashioned the horse still unyoked, still trembling at the bit, in this heavenly stone.

Note: Jasper is alternatively translated as lapis.
